are two villages in the island which has this same name.
The smaller one of the two is located in Limassol, the KIVIDES
village and the other one which is the larger one is located in
KYRENIA. The one located in Kyrenia raises a great amount of wild
apricots and by this reason the Cypriots called this village AYOS
AMVROSIOS and pronounced it as ay (grosi) and this has continued till
today. This town has been built on a field which has a lovely view. The huge graveyards which were mentioned as “Makaria” before Christianity are located next to the town. Before Christianity, the “makaria” people built their houses where they buried their families and today the ESENTEPE village has been established in this way. In
the Makaria period it is known that the first settlers of this place
were the Greeks from the Arkadi region who returned from the war of
Troy. In the west of the village, immigrants from the TESALIN region
established a neighborhood which was first called “IPATI” but after was
changed as “APATI”. In the Ptolemy era this neighborhood did not have
its own kingdom and was governed by the Salamis kingship. The “Makaria”
name came until the Byzantium period and was eliminated when the
Arabian war started in 806-807. With the defeat of the Arabian pirates,
today’s villages AYOS AMVROSIOS (ESENTEPE), KALLOGRIA (BAHÇELI), HARÇA
(KARAAGAC) were established on the ruins which were plundered by the
Arabians. Main Locations in Esentepe Village The Esentepe Ataturk Park’s
construction was completed and the park opened to public use in
1982-83; and the grassing and renovation project for the park was
successfully completed in the year 2004. In May 2005, the
enlargement of the Ataturk portrait sculpture added an exceptional
value to the park. The park is situated at the center of Esentepe
village and it is possible to see people visiting this park at every
hour of the day. The Esentepe wedding park
was constructed in 1990, but because of economical reasons the park is
yet to be fully completed. Along with other planned projects
to be carried out, it is certain that the wedding park will present an
aesthetical and environmental beauty, expected to be one of the finest
places in the village. When entering Esentepe through the mountain road, the police station is located approximately 300 meters ahead on the left hand side of the road. Considering the setting, the police station is distant from the centre of the village. This police station was established in 1974 along with the settlement of refugees from Southern Cyprus and it has one police vehicle and four cabins (houses for employees). Although crime rate is unbelievably low in Kyrenia Esentepe, one would imagine that the number of office holders will increase as more and more people make Esentepe their retirement or holiday home destinations in North Cyprus. The Esentepe Health Center situated at the centre of the village, was established in 1979. Esentepe Public Beach When
leading from the village’s coastal road towards the East, after passing
the Civilian Defense Organization Resting facility for approximately
400-500 meters, the Esentepe Public Beach is situated on the left hand
side of the road. Esentepe Public Beach has two different coasts and an
excellent outdoor café. This nostalgic building adds charm
and character to a very natural and unspoilt environment. It
seems as if it just about stands! The beach is very clean
and there is no fee payable. Alagadi Public Beach Situated in the borders of Esentepe, Alagadi is one of the cleanest and longest stretches of sandy beaches on the island. On
driving from Kyrenia towards Esentepe, at the end of a 16km drive,
taking a left hand turn on the road, Alagadi is situated 600 meters
towards the coast. During the summer season, because the green
turtles (caretta-caretta) have chosen this coast in order to lay their
eggs, vehicle entrance to the beach is prohibited at most late
afternoons and sunsets. Students from different universities
of the world voluntarily arrive to North Cyprus every year and
stay for a full month, in order to help these green turtles lay their
eggs peacefully; to prevent any light or fire from being started at the
sand; to prevent the eggs of these green turtles to be effected by
anything else; and most importantly, to help facilitate the turtles
hatching from the eggs to reach the shore quicker and safer.
Close by, there are services such as a restaurant, showers, wc, and
entrance to the beach is free of charge.Caretta Caretta Turtles of North Cyprus In
the whole of the Mediterranean coast, yearly 300-400 female green
turtles lay approximately 200 carreta eggs. It is a known fact
that these sea turtles do not visit all coasts but certain ones in
order to lay their eggs. They reproduce during June-October and at
every reproduction period they lay approximately 100 eggs into big
holes dig themselves. Alagadi beach, which is in the borders
of Esentepe, is one of the shores these turtles have chosen to arrive
to. After being laid, in 2 months the eggs begin to hatch and at
night the baby turtles begin to come out from under the sand
and try to reach the sea in 10-15 minutes. Any
sound, light or human activity will startle these turtles and
mis-direct them to wrong places. There are very few places left
in the world today for these sea turtles to reproduce. Northern Cyprus
is one of these few places. 10% of caretta caretta turtles and 25%
of green turtles lay their eggs on the shores of North Cyprus.
